Marrakech to Casablanca
- Departure from Marrakech- Our journey starts early in the morning in Marrakech, often called the "Red City" due to the distinctive hue of its buildings and walls. As we leave, the anticipation of exploring Casablanca, Morocco's largest city and economic center, fills the air. The journey from Marrakech to Casablanca takes about three hours, covering a distance of about 240 kilometers via highways.
- Breakfast stop in Settat- After about a two-hour drive, we make our first stop in Settat, a city known for its agricultural importance and bustling markets. Here we will have breakfast and take a short break. Settat offers a glimpse of the rural side of Morocco, in stark contrast to the urban landscapes of Marrakech and Casablanca. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast including msemen (Moroccan pancakes), fresh bread, olives and mint tea. This break also offers the opportunity to use the sanitary facilities before continuing our journey.
Arrival at Casablanca
- As we continue our journey, the landscape gradually moves from the rural expanses to the sprawling urban environment of Casablanca. Known for its modern architecture and historical significance, Casablanca is a city that beautifully merges the old and the new. Our first destination upon arrival is the famous Hassan II Mosque.
The Hassan II Mosque
- The Hassan II Mosque is a must-see in Casablanca. Located on an advance overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this mosque is the largest in Morocco and the second largest active mosque in Africa. Its impressive architecture includes intricate mosaics, marble columns and a minaret that rises to 210 meters, making it the tallest minaret in the world.
- Visitors are often impressed by the grandeur of the mosque and the minuteness of its craftsmanship. The interior can accommodate up to 25,000 worshippers, while the courtyard can hold an additional 80,000.
Guided tours are available for non-Muslims, allowing you to explore the ornate halls and learn about the history and meaning of the mosque.
Driving along the Corniche
- After our visit to the Hassan II Mosque, we continue our exploration of Casablanca by driving along the Corniche, a picturesque boulevard that runs along the Atlantic coast. The Corniche is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering great ocean views and a refreshing sea breeze.
- Driving along the Corniche, you'll see a mix of luxury hotels, beach clubs and restaurants. This area is particularly vibrant in the evening, but during the day it offers a serene and scenic route that showcases Casablanca's coastal beauty. We will make a short stop to take some photos and enjoy the view before heading to our next destination, the Morocco Mall.
Visit to Morocco Mall
- Our next stop is the Morocco Mall, one of Africa's largest shopping malls. Located along the Corniche, the mall is a testament to Casablanca's modernity and commercial importance. It offers a wide range of international and local brands, making it a shopping paradise for visitors.
- Beyond shopping, the Morocco Mall offers a variety of entertainment options, including an indoor aquarium, ice rink, and cinema multiplex. The food court in the mall is diverse, offering everything from fast food to traditional Moroccan cuisine.
Take the time to explore the mall, go shopping or just relax with a cup of coffee.
The old medina
- From the modernity of the Morocco Mall, we move on to the historic charm of the ancient medina of Casablanca. The medina is a labyrinth of narrow walkways, bustling markets and historic buildings that offer a glimpse into Casablanca's past. Unlike the city's well-planned neighborhoods, the old medina is characterized by its organic layout and traditional Moroccan architecture.
- Walking the streets you will come across various stalls selling spices, textiles, leather goods and traditional handicrafts. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the aromas of street food and the sounds of lively activity, offers an immersive cultural experience. One of the highlights of the medina is the opportunity to explore the Art Deco buildings that are a remnant of Casablanca's colonial past.
Savor authentic Moroccan cuisine
- After exploring the medina, it's time to savor authentic Moroccan cuisine. We will have lunch in a good Moroccan restaurant where you can enjoy traditional dishes such as tagine, couscous, pastilla and harira. Moroccan cuisine is known for its rich flavours and aromatic spices, offering a delicious culinary experience.
Place Mohammed V
- Our next stop is Place Mohammed V, a nerve centre in Casablanca named after the former King of Morocco. The square is surrounded by notable buildings, including the Palais de Justice, the Consulate of France and the Wilaya (prefecture). The square itself is beautifully landscaped with fountains and palm trees, providing a pleasant environment for a stroll.
- Place Mohammed V is also a great place to observe the mix of architectural styles in Casablanca, from traditional Moroccan designs to French colonial influences.
As you explore the square, you will have the opportunity to take photos and appreciate the historical and cultural significance of this area.
Back to Marrakech.
- As our day in Casablanca draws to a close, we begin our journey back to Marrakech. However, before arriving in Marrakech, we will make a final stop in Sidi Bou Athmane, a small town known for its charming cafes and friendly locals.
- Here we will take a short break to have a cup of coffee or mint tea and use the sanitary facilities.
